As part of my Dancing in Caves research I've been fortunate to have been put in touch with archaeologist Dr Miles Russell, who shared with me some information about Neolithic Flint Mine Grimes Graves in Norfolk.
Today I had the opportunity to visit and be inspired by two underground sites: Chislehurst Caves and the tunnels of Fort Amherst. Here are a few photographs from my visits.
Our writer for the Dancing in Caves project, poet Anna Selby, recommended to me Professor David Hendy's Radio 4 series Noise: A Human History, and particularly the first episode, 'Echoes in the Dark' which explores the fascinating association between the way in which sound behaves in caves and the sites that prehistoric humans chose for their artwork.
Along the way, we're finding out more about other companies creating and touring work underground, and we were very happy to be able to chat with Kate McStraw, artist and producer, about her work with Butterfly Theatre in Kents Cavern and Pooles Cavern amongst many other places.
Yesterday I took advantage of one of the Reigate Caves Open Days and visited Baron's Cave and the Tunnel Road Caves. Here are a few pictures from my visit.
